Despite its popularity, its meaning has been the source of considerable debate. Lugh, sometimes spelled Lug, was a popular name in Ireland and throughout the Celtic world. His holy day was Lughnasa, which fell on August 1st. His dwellings were at Tara in County Meath, and at Moytura, in County Sligo. He was both Ollamh Érenn and King of the Tuatha Dé Danann, and wielded the Spear of Assal, which none could stand against. The Irish god of nobility, Lugh of the Long Arm was a master of crafts and a cunning warrior. Lugh’s mortal life ended when, after killing his wife’s lover Cermait, Cermait’s three sons speared Lugh through the foot, then drowned him.Īlthough the legends vary on exactly how Cú Chulainn’s mother Deichtine became pregnant, the famous hero’s father is always identified as Lugh. Lugh was certainly one of the most prominent gods in the Celtic pantheon with his position not only as a king and warrior, but as an Irish cultural hero. Was Lugh the most powerful god in Celtic mythology?.
